..................................................................

1.   Introduction:

The Fruit Committee is considered one of the Council committees including most exporters and producers of citrus fruits in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The aim of the Committee, through the meetings held, is to study the current situation of fruit exports, to search for mechanisms that would facilitate the procedures to export Egyptian fruit and to search for solutions to any problems related to production, packaging, export or pertaining to fruits in general.

2.   Mechanism of Action of the Committee:

The Committee shall meet to discuss and exchange views among fruit exporters to achieve the best results for the export of Egyptian fruit and maintaining the fame of the Egyptian product and examining how to access new foreign markets and to maintain the presence of the Egyptian product in traditional markets and work towards increasing this presence. So, it is considered the advisory body through which it raises reports to the Council Board of Directors for approval. Then these are raised to the Minister of Trade and Industry to take whatever he sees.

3. The most important current aims of the Committee

  •   Discussing Egypt's joining UPOV Organization to obtain new varieties.

  •   Discussing how to educate Egyptian farmers of new items (pomegranates, grapes, nectarine, peaches, plums, apples, new fruit varieties) – No suggestions were presented on this topic as well as a recommendation to respect property rights to avoid problems as occurred in the previous season, which led to stopping some exporters of grapes from Egypt.

  •   Expansion in the items required for export abroad.

  •   Providing information (production - export  ...) on crops before start of season.

  •   Experts and training with the HAYA Association.

  •   Reducing the areas for apple and cultivation of new kinds of it.

  •   Expansion in areas for nectarine and peach of the new varieties and origins, figs and plums.

  •   Increase in cultivated areas of mango and new varieties required for export and the expansion of cultivation in the desert with the new kinds.

  •   Recommendation to reduce the areas cultivated with bananas for consumption about 20 thousand cubic meters of water per year.

  •   Putting the technical specifications of fruits.

  •   Establishing a mechanism to monitor products before being exported (ratios of pesticide residues)

  •   Encouraging the establishment of nurseries to produce seedlings free of viruses and diseases with the presence of devices to detect these viruses

  •   Encouraging the establishment of units for the production of natural enemies, which destroy harmful enemies.

  •   Raising the awareness of tree farmers in the delta to convert to the developed irrigation system and to find bank financing to help them to do so.

  • Discussing the appointment of a Coordinator (Executive Director of the Commission) for sub-committees and follow up the implementation of Committee objectives and determining his monthly dues.

5.   Matters related to the fruits Committee:

Not available currently.

6. The process of upgrading the Egyptian fruit exports "Branding":

  •   Developing a specification for the production of first class for some fruit crops required in foreign markets that are not binding on the Egyptian exporter when exporting to these markets so as not to prevent any source of Egyptian export with the specification to be agreed upon with his client importer, taking into account the minimum specification of Egyptian Standard Specification (considered as the minimum).

  •   Development of a Logo from the Ministry of Trade and Industry same as that of Egyptian Cotton Logo which is only given upon completion of first class specification and the purpose is promotion (Branding). It shall not be imposed on Egyptian exporters to export under which, except with their complete wish and free will.

  •   This could lead in the future to attracting the majority of Egyptian exporters and increasing their desire to produce and export under this logo after promotion and support as well as delimiting until vanishing Egyptian exported product below the level, which would make the importer lose confidence in dealing and harm the reputation of Egyptian exports as a whole by losing its esteem.

  •   Finding an inspection and accreditation company, for example SGS company or the South African PPECB to work as a third party with the task of inspection of shipments prior to export and accreditation of the specification with full cooperation with the Public Authority for control of exports and imports and giving them together the logo after making sure that they meet the specification required.

  •   As for the exporter, he should be registered at the Exporters' Register in the General Authority for Control of Exports and Imports by obtaining a certificate of practicing export from the Foreign Trade Training Center, latest three months as of application date. We suggest that a letter is written to the Ministry of Trade and Industry to highlight the need of the exporter getting quality certificates such as ISO 9001 and other

  •   In case the importer having filling stations, we suggest the development of a new specification for the fruit filling stations along the lines of Decree No. 109 on citrus stations.

  •   Providing technical assistance to train and qualify exporters through the HAYA Association and addressing the IMC to help obtain quality certificates for packaging stations, including: BRC, IFS and ISO 22000.
