China remains a main export market

2020/2021 Citrus production in Egypt and South Africa rises

As a result of expanding acreages in production and favorable weather during the flowering and fruit setting periods, the total production of Egyptian oranges is expected to increase by 200,000 tons in 2020/2021 to 3.4 million tons. Consumption, processing, and export volumes will all increase with the increase in supply. It is expected that European Union, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and China will remain the main export markets.

For South African oranges, thanks to normal weather conditions, an increase in planted area of high-yield late varieties, and improved water management, the total production is expected to increase by 3% to 1.7 million tons in 2020/2021. Export volume is expected to rise slightly to 1.3 million tons, accounting for more than a quarter of global trade. The EU is expected to remain South Africa’s largest market, accounting for more than one-third of its exports. China is also one of its main export destinations.

The total production of grapefruit in South Africa will slightly increase to 360,000 tons; the total production of lemons is expected to increase by 2% to a record 670,000 tons.
